The Preschool Classroom
Our classrooms are carefully prepared environments, designed to encourage independence and build concentration and self-discipline. There are materials specifically designed for each of the five aforementioned subject areas, and these are accessible to all in the classroom. Children are introduced to these amterials via a well defined sequence, so that each exercise prepares the child for the next step in the curriculum. The furniture and shelves all child-sized and are arranged in such a way as to allow children to move freely and explore their environment, with their teacher directing them as needed.

Our Preschool Programme
The MSB pre-school programme consists of five distinct areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Maths, Language and Culture. These are the foundation of the Montessori programme.

Practical Life
In Montessori, the term “Practical Life” encompasses domestic work (maintaining the home and classroom environment), self-care and personal hygiene, and grace and courtesy. The practical life skills are of great interest to young children and provide the basis for future abstract learning.
Young children in Montessori classrooms learn to take care of themselves and their environment through activities such as hand washing, polishing and dressing. Such activities encourage children to work independently, while developing their concentration, cognitive abilities and fine and gross motor skills, all of which are required for reading, writing and maths.

Sensorial
The sensorial exercises develop and refine the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. They also provide the foundation for speech, writing and maths through the use of specially designed materials. These are a direct introduction to maths, introducing the child to the base of ten and giving them a sensorial impression of the mathematical world and the language of mathematics.These exercises also bring order to the array of sensorial impressions the child experiences from birth onwards.

Language
In MSB’s pre-school programme, language is a rich and spiraled subject consisting of four main aspects: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The emphasis here is on spoken language. Before the child is introduced to Montessori materials, there is a lot of work to be done in the area of Early Language. Circle time is a chance to listen and take turns speaking and presenting.
When children are ready, they are introduced to phonics through sandpaper letters, word building with a moveable alphabet, blending phonetic words and phonograms. These eventually pave the way towards reading. Emphasis is also placed on other skills such as pencil control, handwriting and the fundamentals of grammar.

Mathematics
The Montessori approach to maths is logical, clear and concrete. Children are introduced to numbers and quantities through a sensorial presentation, first, learning the symbols 1-10 through the sandpaper numbers then matching the quantities to these symbols. Sequencing, place value and mathematical operations are also presented in this manner.
Here at MSB, it is quite typical to see our Kindergarten children doing operations in addition or subtraction with numbers in the thousands. The wide variety of material in the maths area of the classroom will be used in subsequent grades to reinforce and extend abstract concepts taught in pre-school.

Culture
At MSB, history, geography, botany and zoology are presented to all pre-school children. As a vibrant and multicultural school, we are able to bring these subjects to life. The children learn about the continents, the countries of their classmates and their own, and the traditions, festivals and customs of China and countries around the world.

Music
Music is an integral part of the day in our preschool classes. Classical music can often be heard playing in the background while children work, and music and movement are a daily part of group activities. The children have formal music classes twice a week, during which they learn about rhythm, melody, harmony, as well as sing and play instruments. There are several musical performances throughout the year, which not only instill the children with confidence but also give them a chance to shine.

Creativity and self-expression through art is embraced and encouraged at MSB. All classrooms possess an art area where children can cut, draw, paste, paint and create every day. The Kindergarten classes have two formal art lessons a week, during which children are introduced to a variety of media and art forms. Our annual Art Show gives every child the opportunity to display his or her work.
